Stuck at the Same Level? Here’s How You Can Break Through to the Next One

You have been here a while now. You are good at your job, actually, really good. Your manager knows it. Your team knows it. You know it. And yet, when it comes to that next role, that next title, that next level of responsibility… somehow it’s just not happening.

If this is you, you are not alone. This is one of the most common DMs we get in our MumInStilettos inbox. Capable, experienced women who are wondering, “Why am I stuck?”
Let’s talk about it.

Why You Are Stuck
The plateau isn’t usually about competence. At this stage in your career, you have proven you can do the work. The issue is almost always one or more of these:

1. You are valued where you aremaybe too much. Sometimes the very thing that makes you excellent at your current role is what keeps you there. You have become indispensable, and nobody is actively thinking about moving you up because they can’t imagine functioning without you.

2. You haven’t made your ambition visible. Many women assume their work will speak for them.  It rarely does m. Advancement requires you to be seen as someone who is ready for more  and that means communicating your ambition clearly and strategically.

3. You are waiting to be “ready”. Research consistently shows that women apply for roles when they meet 100% of the criteria, while men apply at 60%. If you are waiting until you feel fully ready, you may be waiting too long.

4. Your network isn’t working for you. At senior levels, opportunities come through relationships as much as through formal processes. If the people making decisions don’t know your name and your vision, you are invisible to the process.

How to Break Through: Practical Steps
1. Have the conversation, directly. Schedule a deliberate conversation with your manager about your career trajectory. Don’t hint. Be clear: “I am ready for the next level and I wouldld like to discuss what that path looks like.” Many women are passed over simply because nobody knew they wanted more.

2. Build your visibility strategically. Volunteer for high-profile projects. Present in senior forums. Contribute ideas in spaces where decision-makers are watching. Visibility is not vanity,  it is strategy.

3. Start leading beyond your job description. Before you get the title, start demonstrating the behaviours of the level above. Mentor others. Think strategically, not just operationally. Bring solutions, not just problems.

4. Invest in your network — inside and outside your organisation. Identify two or three senior leaders whose careers inspire you and build genuine relationships with them. Seek out a sponsor (not just a mentor),  someone who will advocate for you in rooms you are not in.

5. Document and own your achievements. Keep a running record of your wins, the problems you have solved and the value you have delivered. When the opportunity to make a case for yourself comes, and it will, you need to be ready with evidence, not just effort.

6. Consider external opportunities. Sometimes a lateral move to a new organisation is the fastest path upward. Don’t be so loyal to a company that you become blind to the possibilities outside of it.

Something To Reflect On. Breaking through to the next level is rarely just about working harder. It’s about working smarter, showing up more boldly, and refusing to shrink yourself to fit a space that was always too small for you.
You were not built to stay stuck. You were built to rise.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

This verse is a reminder that  stagnation is not your destination. There is a future being prepared for you and your job is to have the courage to walk towards it.
